I have neverThe season 2 finale ended well for Devi, not so much for her longtime academic rival and sometimes boyfriend, Ben Gross.
Both attended their school’s winter ceremony, but not together; Ben accompanied his girlfriend, Aneesa, while Devi and his single girlfriend Eleanor decided to go out together. Everything seemed pretty cold until Paxton, who Devi had chased all year round – including when she and Ben were dating, oops! – introduced himself and told Devi he wanted to be her man, after all. (He also hit her with his car, but that’s okay. She’s fine.)
As Paxton and Devi slowly danced, Ben mumbled that Paxton had always been Devi’s endgame. But Eleanor, who stood nearby and heard it, quickly corrected it. She pointed out that Devi moved all in with Ben after he led her to spread her father’s ashes at the end of Season 1, but that she and Fabiola convinced Devi to go after Paxton in the place. Jaren Lewison, who plays Ben, tells TVLine that filming these scenes had a profound effect on him… but maybe not for the reasons you might think.
“I walked in and got goosebumps and had a hard time speaking, which is weird, because I’m super loud and passionate in real life,” he says. “Even now, just talking about it, I still have butterflies in my stomach, because it was magic. See everyone in disguise, the decor was beautiful and the lighting so beautiful. Add to that that Ben’s shipwrecked moment was Lewison’s last scene of the season – not a given in an industry that often spins out of order to maximize production efficiency – and the reveal had an impact. extra power.
“I just remember this great feeling of gratitude and joy to have the chance to be a part of such an incredible show, an incredible season,” he says. “And then hopefully get the chance to pick up on that and keep building on this world for Season 3.”

TV LINE | Let’s take a step back: do you think Ben ever had feelings for another girl like he did for Devi?
I think it’s hard to say. Devi… is everything Ben is looking for. Ben is looking for someone who is really smart and confident and a little bit wild, who can push and challenge him both personally and academically. And when you pair that with a base of so many years of rivalry that ultimately turns into a friendship, and they still have that special way of joking, and the ability to come back to each other on such a deep level because of the way they get to know each other …
She’s really special that way, and that’s why he feels so strong for her. It’s very difficult for him to shut off those feelings and move on and get over her. I don’t think this is something that happens easily. And obviously we see that mostly at the end with that look, and Ben exclaiming how it’s always been Paxton, then, finding out that it does not have always been Paxton. It bothers his head.
TV LINE | It made me wonder if Ben felt like a Paxton finalist from the start, and if that influenced some of the other choices he made over the season.
As brutal as it sounds, I think Ben has been a finalist his entire life. He was a finalist at home when his absent father always chose his clients over his own son. He often feels like a runner-up in school when he loses to Devi. He is a finalist for his mother’s attention, who does various things when she truly is a stay-at-home mom and should be home supporting her son.
I think he feels like he’s been the second pick his entire life, which is why it hurts so much to see Paxton and Devi together – as well as, in hindsight, at the start of the season, when he gets cheated on. It’s so upsetting for him because he found a place he belonged to, and he found a place where he felt valued and appreciated while all his life he felt invisible, inaudible and worthless.
TV LINE | We see Ben comforting Devi in the school bathroom after Paxton throws her down the hall, and it’s a sweet moment. Do you think he would be okay with them just becoming friends again?
Yes. I mean, I think Ben will always have a soft spot for Devi, and Devi will always have a soft spot for Ben, and I don’t even think he’s necessarily ruled out a bit the possibility of another romantic relationship later on on the day. line. Their connection is so strong. It’s so obvious that they have this magnetism towards each other because no matter what happens they always seem to come together, whether it’s Ben in season 1 going to Devi’s house when he has it. most needed, or at the end of the Season 1 finale where Ben drives Devi to Malibu, then, in Season 2 with Ben in that bathroom scene for Devi, then Devi is still there to get Ben back too, even sometimes when it is the cause of part of his pain.
You can’t fight that to an extent, and I think Ben knows that. He feels it. He thinks of Devi frequently, whether as a friend or as something more. Again, I don’t think he could turn off those feelings so easily and so quickly.
… If we have this season 3, which, you know, obviously, I really hope we get that chance. Who knows? I have no idea how he will deal with this inner conflict in the end. These emotions were obviously slightly subconscious to him, and then pushed to the surface, and he’s going to have to figure out how to deal with them.
