An artificial intelligence-based service called Deep Nostalgia that animates photos became the main character on Twitter this beautiful Sunday, as people try to create the scariest fake “video” possible, apparently.
The Deep Nostalgia service, offered by online genealogy company MyHeritage, uses AI licensed from D-ID to create the effect that a still photo is moving. It’s a bit like the iOS Live Photos feature, which adds seconds of video to help smartphone photographers find the best shot.
But Deep Nostalgia can take photos from any camera and bring them “to life”. The program uses pre-recorded pilot videos of facial movements and applies the one that works best for the still photo in question. Its purpose is for you to upload photos of deceased loved ones and see them in “action”, which sounds like a nice idea.
Users must sign up for a free account on MyHeritage and then upload a photo. From there, the process is automated; the site improves the image before animating it and creating a gif. The site’s FAQ states that it does not provide the photos to any third party, and on its main page, a message states “Photos uploaded without completing registration are automatically deleted to protect your privacy.”
Naturally, the program has become something of a memes generator on Twitter, with users trying to push the AI to its limit. An archaeologist used photos of ancient statues, and yes, they included some with empty eyes. Sorry in advance for the nightmarish fuel (but hey there is Alexander the Great):
Deep Nostalgia can only handle single headshots and can only animate faces, so you won’t be able to revive the mummies to make them look like they’re walking (hey I wondered, okay?). You can upload five photos for free to the MyHeritage website for a Deep Nostalgia treatment, after which you must sign up for a paid account.
I wonder if there maybe some photos that are better left un-animated? I am wary of uploading photos to any site and believe the usual privacy precautions still apply. But if you want to try Deep Nostalgia, be prepared for a surreal experience. AI is awfully good.
