New Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai praised by Vic Fangio

The Chicago Bears have found their new defensive coordinator in Sean Desai, who has been Chicago’s safety coach for the past two years and has been with the squad since 2013.

With the Bears choosing to promote from within, they are able to keep the consistency of the defensive coaching staff and give an opportunity to a rising star. Desai has received praise from across the league, including former players, analysts and even his former mentor, Vic Fangio.

Fangio was Chicago’s defensive coordinator for four years, including leading the league’s best defense in 2018. This landed Fangio a head coach job at Denver and the Bears without their guy.

Now it looks like the bears have the best thing for Fangio – his right hand man, Desai – and Fangio thinks he’s ready.

“I think Sean is ready,” Fangio said, via the Chicago Tribune. “He thinks he is, which is more than half the battle. I know he has confidence in himself that he can do it. He definitely thinks he’s more than ready for it and that is a big part of it. He’s confident and I think players will see how confident he is and how excited he is, which will get them off to a good start.

Instead of choosing an experienced coordinator, Matt Nagy chose to promote from the inside out in order to maintain continuity within the coaching staff. That, and it gives a young rising star the opportunity he’s been waiting to prove himself, much like Brandon Staley before him.

It also helps the Bears have someone who knows Fangio’s system and staff in place, which should definitely help get this defense back on track.

Fangio was delighted with Desai’s contributions to shaping this bear defense and a good understanding of the system these players thrived in.

“Right off the bat his work ethic was really good and he quickly learned our system that we were putting in place and grew with him over the four years that I was there,” Fangio said, “and me, when I say that I grew up with it, it was there with the logical progression that we went through with the players that we had from the beginning to the players that we ended up with.

“He had a good mix of coaching, a forward and a secondary position that gave him a good understanding and a good overview of our system and our defense at that time. This should give it a good head start on all of this and that’s a big part of the problem. The front must match the rear and vice versa.

Desai has been with the Bears since 2013, when he was hired as a quality control assistant by Marc Trestman. Since then he has worked his way up the ranks, taking over as a safety coach when Chuck Pagano took over as defensive coordinator in 2019.

While Desai is unproven merchandise at this point, it certainly helps to have someone like Fangio around – someone who has highly appreciated his contribution to this Bears defense.
