Although it was discontinued by TCL earlier this year, BlackBerry appears to be resurrected, meaning we’ll see new smartphones with 5G connectivity and physical keyboards.
The former king of QWERTY smartphones is expected to return to the European and North American markets at some point in 2021 through a licensing partnership with OnwardMobility and FIH Mobile Limited. BlackBerry has granted the teams the rights to develop, design and manufacture a new 5G compatible BlackBerry branded mobile device. Notice solo “device” rather than a series of devices, as we don’t know if this partnership will extend beyond a single smartphone hardware.
Since there is still a very small market for Android devices with physical keyboards, this could be great news for some of you who are clamoring for a device to replace an aging BlackBerry device. However, OnwardMobility did not provide any further information about the project or any potential material.
“BlackBerry is delighted that OnwardMobility is providing a BlackBerry 5G smartphone with physical keyboard that leverages our high standards of trust and security that are synonymous with our brand. We’re excited that customers can enjoy the enterprise and government-level mobile security and productivity that the new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will deliver, ”said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO of BlackBerry.
Considering the difficulty BlackBerry has faced in recent years, this is an odd decision but one that will be welcomed by the hardcore fan base. It is also impressive how difficult it was to “completely” kill the brand. Just when you think BlackBerry smartphones are finally dead, they’re rising from the grave like a mid-2000s Undertaker seemed right in time for Wrestlemania every year.
Much like the Deadman, we’re not sure this “streak” of rebirths can continue forever.
