The number of new coronavirus cases in the United States rose but remained below 50,000 for the fourth day in a row, as some universities and schools move courses online to avoid epidemics on campuses.
The United States reported more than 44,000 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, up sharply from 35,112 the previous day, but below recent peaks this month and into July, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The total number of cases in the United States has approached 5.5 million, while the death toll in the country has approached 172,000.
