PHILADELPHIA – New Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has said he “can’t answer” whether quarterback Carson Wentz will be on the squad in 2021 as he is “assessing everything”.
“What we need to do is assess the whole list,” Sirianni said in his introductory press conference on Friday. “We have two quarterbacks to Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts who are top-notch quarterbacks. A lot of teams don’t. So it’s really excited to be working with both.”
Sirianni added that he is not ready to say if there will be open quarterback competition this offseason and that he has not set a schedule for when he must pick his starter.
Wentz’s relationship with the organization grew strained in a 2020 season in which he led the league in interceptions (15) and sacks (50) and was benched in favor of Hurts for the last four games. He was planning to request a trade this offseason due to a fractured relationship with coach Doug Pederson, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. Pederson was fired on Jan.11 after he and his owner Jeffrey Lurie failed to align with a vision for the team going forward.
Sirianni and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen spoke to Wentz last week. Sirianni said he couldn’t talk about any issues between Wentz and the team but had a “good conversation” with Wentz.
Sirianni also spoke to Hurts, the team’s 2020 second-round pick who gave the offense a spark when he was inserted into the roster before cooling off a bit later.
“The same conversation with him is that I’m really excited to be working with him,” Sirianni said. “We studied him last year, he had a great college tape. He played some meaningful shots this year that he played well in.”
Still in the process of hiring assistant coaches and acclimating to his new role, Sirianni said he and his team have yet to dive into the movie of the game, including quarterbacks.
“Every position is going to be evaluated, and every position will be open,” he said, “and we can’t wait to start watching the tape and see what our players can do.”
