New creation from Popeyes: its chicken sandwich … only with fish

The sandwich, which includes a puff pastry served on a brioche bun with pickles, will be available in restaurants nationwide for a limited time starting Thursday. The fish sandwich sells for $ 4.49 a soft drink, a slight premium over the $ 3.99 chicken sandwich.

This comes at a time when sales on Popeyes sites are doing well for the brand’s parent company, Restaurant Brands International (QSR). In the three months ended September 30, sales at restaurants open for 17 months or more jumped 17.4%.

With the Chicken Sandwich, “We’ve raised the bar on what a premium sandwich should look like,” said Sami Siddiqui, President of the Americas at Popeyes. “We wanted to do the same with the fish.”

To attract customers who liked the chicken sandwich, Popeyes uses the same combination of bread and pickles in the fish version. It also offers “sandwich insurance” on launch day. For an additional 15 cents, people who buy the fish sandwich and don’t like it can swap it for a chicken sandwich.

Popeyes tested the sandwich in Chicago around the same time last year, where “it went incredibly well,” Siddiqui Noted.

He added that if the sandwich does as well as its chicken counterpart, the chain will consider making it a permanent addition.

It remains to be seen whether Americans will have the same appetite for fish as they do for Chicken Popeyes. The number of fish sandwiches on U.S. menus fell 8% from 2017 to 2019, according to Mintel market research firm.

But in grocery stores and other retailers, seafood is growing in popularity during the pandemic. Seafood sales jumped 28% to $ 16.7 billion in 2020, from the previous year, according to Nielsen.
