STUDIO CITY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) – New details are appearing on how the detectives revealed the murder committed by Barry Crane in Hollywood, and we hear the suspect, who is now in custody.

The 34-year-old murder in Los Angeles may have been solved in North Carolina.

The suspect Ed Hiatt was arrested this week for the murder of Crane in July 1985. He was found at Studio City beaten and strangled to death in his garage. Hiatt was only 18 years old at the time.

While Hiatt was escorted by the authorities on Thursday, a North Carolina television station caught up with him.

"Have you ever thought they'd catch you?" a reporter asked.

"I had no idea what was happening when they met me for the first time," Hiatt said.

The case was a big news in the 80s. Crane produced and directed some of the most iconic television shows of that era: "Mission Impossible", "Wonder Woman", "Hawaii Five-0", "The Six Million Dollar Man "and" The Incredible Hulk ".

"Everyone knew Barry, and suddenly his maid found him wrapped in a sheet, bloody in his garage? So it was a terrible story," said entertainment journalist Jeanne Wolf .

The FBI said they were able to associate Hiatt's DNA on cigarette butts in North Carolina with cigarettes found in Crane's stolen car in 1985.

"You do not remember what happened in 1985?" the reporter asked Hiatt.

"I do not have a very good memory, pieces that have been reported by simple suggestion," he replied.

"Could you have committed this murder in 1985?" the reporter asked.

"Everything is possible at the time …", he says.

"But you have no memory of it?" another reporter asked.

"No, because I was addicted to drugs," Hiatt added.

LA County Attorney General Jackie Lacey announced murder charges on Friday and Hiatt is awaiting L.A.'s extradition.
