New electric car battery charges as fast as filling the gas tank

An electric car battery that can be charged in 5 minutes, the time it takes to fill a tank of gasoline, was first produced at a factory in China.

The new lithium-ion batteries were developed by the Israeli company StoreDot and manufactured by Eve Energy in China. The company has produced 1,000 battery samples that meet Li-ion battery certifications, StoreDot announced Tuesday.

The samples will be used to introduce the company’s technology to potential buyers and investors looking to enter the electric vehicle market, including BP, Daimler, Samsung Ventures and TDK.

Faster charging batteries would make electric vehicles more functional

For many drivers, electric cars are not feasible for long trips due to the time required to charge the vehicles. According to PodPoint, a maker of electric vehicle chargers, current electric car batteries on the market can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours to charge, although a typical electric vehicle takes about 8 hours to charge from empty to full. .

Electric vehicles are a crucial part of Biden’s $ 2 trillion climate change plan, in which he wants an all-green electricity grid by 2035 with cars running on electricity instead of gasoline. StoreDot’s new battery technology would make that green future more achievable, removing what CEO Doron Myersdorf calls the electric vehicle’s biggest hurdle: “range and charging anxiety”.

“Today’s announcement marks an important milestone, taking XFC for the first time beyond innovation in the laboratory to a commercially viable product that is scalable for mass production,” said Myersdorf. in the press release. “We are poised to achieve a revolution in the EV charging experience that will remove the critical barrier to mass EV adoption.”

Electric cars average around 250 miles of driving capacity per charge. With a battery that could recharge faster, drivers would not be limited in range and could take electric vehicles on longer trips like any other conventional car.

While current lithium-ion batteries use graphite as an electrode, the StoreDot battery operates faster by replacing graphite with semiconductor nanoparticles that allow ions to pass more easily and quickly. The company plans to replace this electrode with silicon, a much cheaper component, by the end of the year.

Tesla is also working on the development of silicon electrodes.

On Monday, Musk tweeted: “Battery cell production is the fundamental flow restrictor slowing down a sustainable energy future. A very significant issue.”

Tesla has made strides in giving EVs longer range through an extensive network of superchargers, as well as its new generation of long-range electric cars that can go up to 400 miles between charges. Musk hopes to make electric cars as convenient and accessible as vehicles with conventional combustion engines.

Fast-charging EV batteries are still several years away

StoreDot’s five-minute battery will likely not hit the mainstream market for many years to come, as mass production won’t be available for some time as the company continues to refine its technology.

StoreDot has experimented with fast charging batteries for phones, drones, and scooters in the past. In 2014, the company developed a prototype charger that could take your phone’s battery from dead to fully charged in 30 seconds.
