New England experiences wave of COVID despite high vaccination rates

Hospitals in most New England states are experiencing full intensive care units and staffing shortages as growing coronavirus cases continue to rock the area, AP reports.

Why is this important: The New England region has the highest vaccination rate in the country, by AP. However, states are still reporting a record number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, comparable to pre-vaccine peaks.

  • The infections recorded are largely among the unvaccinated, with complete vaccination rates in the six New England states ranging from a high of 69.4% to 61.5%, per AP.

What they say : “I think this is clearly frustrating for all of us, “Vermont Department of Financial Regulation commissioner Michael Pieciak told AP.

  • “We want children to be safe in school, we want parents to not have to worry about the education and health of their children,” he added.
