Apple Watch Series 5 shows how Apple plans to aggressively embrace health applications and capitalize on its momentum.

At the launch ceremony of the iPhone, Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, aired a video showing a host of Apple Watch customers who had used the device to pre-empt their problems cardiacs, dial 911 and receive alerts that save lives. The Apple Watch starts at $ 399 for the 5 Series with GPS and $ 499 for the cellular version. Apple maintains the series 3 at $ 199, a price that should bring Apple Watch to more converts.

Stories are legitimate – we have one among us ZDNet – and the not so subliminal message is clear: Apple Watch is your companion in health and well-being. "Hearing these stories really makes my heart sing," Cook said.

Apple explained how Apple Watch contributes to research, development and science in the health field. For example, more than 400,000 people participated in the Heart Watch Apple Watch. Apple launches three more studies, namely:

  • Apple Hearing Study, analysis of the impact of noise on health.
  • Apple's Women's Health Study, examining conditions and their application to menstrual cycles.
  • Apple Heart & Movement Study, which examines interventions that affect the heart.

You can register through the Apple Research App available in the United States later this year.

Among the main features:

  • A display always active;
  • A new display driver with low power consumption and better refresh rates;
  • The same battery lasts 18 hours all day;
  • Optimized measurements of training on the screen and applications;
  • Updated Maps application and integrated compass;
  • More choices in casings and finishes in silver, gold and gray aluminum, as well as in titanium and ceramic.

The pillars of Apple's health in place

Last year, Apple introduced its project to extend the Apple Watch to health and wellness programs for human resources. The 2019 iPhone event highlighted the pursuit of a larger plan for the Apple Watch to dominate digital health and wellness.

In simple terms, Apple has methodically set up the building blocks of the Apple Watch Health. The first signs of Apple's growing interest in health came with the launch of its HealthKit platform and its Health app, which debuted alongside the first Apple Watch. The launch of CareKit and ResearchKit showed that Apple is also thinking about how to work with healthcare professionals.

Apple Watch Series 4 offered the opportunity to offer an ECG directly to consumers. The Apple Watch Series 4 has been redesigned to improve battery life, but many customers still had to charge their device in a day. This reality meant that functions such as sleep monitoring were feasible but often fell apart.

Nevertheless, Apple last year added a host of customizations for breathing, meditation and other wellness activities.

And before the launch of the latest Apple Watch, Apple had already multiplied partnerships and wellness programs in business. Apple has also entered into integration agreements with electronic health records.

Today, Apple is actively using Apple Watch "the centerpiece of corporate wellness programs". Apple has established partnerships with Virgin Pulse and offers business challenges as well as integration to wellness platforms.

While revenues generated by corporate wellness programs are likely a rounding error for Apple, these efforts make the device more clingy. Apple is also able to leverage its dynamism iOS, iPhone and iPad within the company to expand its Apple Watch applications.

Another development to watch is the AirPod range of Apple, which can also have health apps that will go with Apple Watch. According to IDC, second-quarter portable clothing shipments increased 85.2% in the second quarter to 67.7 million, with inflatable vehicles accounting for most of the growth.

IDC noted that consumers are buying so-called "compatible devices" for smartwatches and trackers. Apple holds 50.25% of the exploitable market, followed by Samsung.

Here is an overview of the distribution of the portable clothing market between smartwatches, audio devices and trackers.

Apple will connect Apple Watch and AirPod for apps and health data.

Fitbit Health Solutions in competition

Apple certainly has the size for its Apple watch, but Fitbit said it is on track to reach the $ 100 million business figure for its Fitbit Health Solutions unit.

Fitbit has aggregated data, coaching and greater experience in landing wellness programs with Singapore, as well as UnitedHealthcare. Fitbit has also launched scales and seems more than willing to offer free handsets to land-based companies.

The ambitions of the Fitbit business are related to the need to sell well its devices. After its third quarter results, Fitbit was defeated by slower than expected sales of its Versa Lite smartwatch. Fitbit has since updated its smartwatch range.

Meanwhile, Fitbit also sells trackers to a healthy clip. Fitbit's ultimate ambition is to use its customer data on a global scale to sell premium services and subscriptions.

What is uncertain is if Apple will gain so much scale that data, applications and the business ecosystem will invade Fitbit. However, there are probably more than enough business health plans and health system accounts to go around.
