It must be a typical human fear of disliking things with pale faces like death, dark eyes, and costumes. I know I’m definitely not a fan, but this specific type of villain is used to appearing in scary games, movies, and TV shows. Last night, the paranormal action RPG Ghostwire: Tokyo received a new trailer as part of the PlayStation demo stream, and it’s packed with these villains who look a lot like the Gentlemen from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
The obvious comparison is that they look like Slenderman, right? And they do it a bit, but the key with old Slendy is that he doesn’t have any sort of face, whereas Ghostwire’s creepy bastards have a bit (even though they call themselves the faceless ones). I can’t decide if it’s better or worse, to be honest.
I hope they are not like the Gentlemen, who were true demons invulnerable to physical damage and who went from place to place slashing people’s voices. They also look a bit like Dr. Who’s Silence, which would make you forget things. I would like to forget them, in fact.
Something that makes the Faceless considerably less scary, however, is when you realize that most of what they’re doing in this trailer is trying to hit you with umbrellas. Like, I’m sorry, are you coming to me? A guy with magical powers that I can use to make you back down? Put that umbrella away, you absolute numpty.
All that aside, Ghostwire: Tokyo looks very good and very scary. The developers Tango Gameworks plan to release it early next year. Too bad really, that would have made a nice Halloween game.
