New Google Assistant on Pixel returns to original design

In early August, the new Google Assistant lost its translucent / transparent user interface. NGA’s original design is back on Pixel phones today, although it’s not clear if the look is here to stay.

Update 10/6: The original NGA design is now gone as it becomes apparent that the short panel user interface is here to stay. Some users also see Material You, but it’s not yet widely deployed on Android 12. Most people just have a light or dark panel. This new look was most likely chosen to allow for a cohesive Dynamic Color theme.

It emanated from the four-color light bar for a very smooth viewing experience. The look reflected a lot of how Google wanted the Assistant to be in the background.

It was replaced by a compact sheet – which took up roughly the same space as the previous UI but without the ability to display your background – with the “g” wizard and only a shortcut for entering text. The lack of quick access to snapshots was baffling. If this design had any advantage, it matched Assistant on all other Android phones. At the time, we were speculating:

Google could update the look of NGA to unify the look of Assistant, but it’s a bit of a shame that the replacement is very straightforward and lacks the nuance introduced by the original design.

The new Google Assistant disappears

When restoring, Google could respond to comments from customers who preferred the old, almost iconic design. That said, we don’t know if it’s here to stay – with the Google 12.37 beta app. The company might consider updating to NGA when the Pixel 6 launches, and more recent Google phones would likely get what that look will be. In the meantime, it’s a welcome return.
