Android 12 is completely revitalizing widgets, and while a public version won’t be available until this fall, we’re already starting to see the effects. Spotify is working on redesigning its music player widget, Chrome is testing a new quick-action search widget, and now it’s time for Google Photos to do the same.
The folks at 9to5Google discovered and forcibly activated the new Photos widget early last month. According to our tipster Rohitit is now starting to roll out to users with version 5.52.0.387241369 (APK Mirror) of the app. However, this is still a server side deployment and it has not reached any of our devices yet.
Once placed, this widget will recreate the Memories tab at the top of the Photos app right on your home screen. Google already has a very similar widget on iOS, and it’s great to see it coming to Android in one form or another.
Just like on iPhone, this new Memories widget comes in different shapes and sizes, although the default 2×2 grid is tall and thin due to the structure of the home screen. Unlike iOS, however, you can resize it however you like, with images enlarged or reduced to fit whatever shape you’re using.

Since the widget displays everything that appears in the Memories grid in the Photos app, you’ll likely take some interesting photos there. Google continues to expand its categories for old resurfaced photos, which we tracked monthly. So the next time you want to review all of your previous camping trips, you might not even need to open the app itself.

The code for this new widget was found in version 5.49 of Google Photos last month, and is now active for some users in version 5.52. You can make sure you have the latest version from the Play Store or manually grab it from APK Mirror, although that doesn’t mean you’ll get it right away. This is the problem with server side deployments.
