The recently shared prototype images show that Apple has considered making the iPhone X in the dark and glossy “jet black” finish. This color was incredibly popular when it was introduced with the iPhone 7, but it had major durability issues.
The images come from Mr. White on Twitter, which regularly shares prototypes of older Apple products. These images show the iPhone X’s design in jet black alongside the space gray version that Apple eventually delivered. The jet black color is clearly a lot darker than the space gray ended up being.
There is no branding on the iPhone shown in these images as the device was in the prototype stage. It is not known how far the jet black iPhone reached the prototype stage.
As a reminder, the iPhone X was only available in two colors: space gray and silver. Apple reportedly planned a version of the iPhone X in gold, as evidenced by the images leaked by the FCC, but it ultimately never saw the light of day.
IPhone 7 jet black story
The jet black variant of the iPhone 7 was very popular, and also very difficult to obtain at first due to the imbalances between supply and demand. Notably, this popularity has come despite concerns about durability. Even Apple warned that the jet black iPhone 7 would be subject to “fine micro-abrasions,” saying at the time:
The glossy finish of the Jet Black iPhone 7 is achieved through a nine-step precision anodizing and polishing process. Its surface is just as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high gloss may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are worried about this, we suggest using one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.
Indeed, my 9to5Mac Colleague Zac Hall shared a follow-up a year after the iPhone 7 was introduced, showing how stoned his jet-black iPhone 7 had become.
These durability issues could explain why Apple decided not to make the iPhone X available in jet black the following year, despite the idea being prototyped. The iPhone X was also severely limited in supply, and Apple likely had to reduce the number of SKUs in order to simplify production and meet demand.
