Covid-19 case in New Jersey are increasing at an alarming rate. Governor Phil Murphy said on Sunday there have been more than 4,500 new cases – a number the state has not seen since the pandemic began, CBS New York reports. It comes as the cumulative number of coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed 11 million over the weekend, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Stricter restrictions are now in place in the Garden State, forcing bars and restaurants to shut down indoor service before 10 p.m. in order to slow the spread.
In the wake of the decision, the state is now reviewing 4,540 new cases, up from Friday’s record increase.
Hospitalizations are also on the rise, according to CBS New York.
State officials are reporting 18 new deaths so far, but the number of people dying remains well below what it was in the spring.
Some in the community are nervous, while others try to keep calm.
“Nervous, worried, hoping that they will come up with some sort of safe treatment vaccine as soon as they can,” said Jennifer Prezant of Ho-Ho-Kus.
“I’m not worried because I wear a mask, be careful, wash my hands and do all that,” added Bruce Tyler of Montclair.
Murphy took to the alarming situation on Twitter, imploring residents to wear masks and practice social distancing. He also said residents need to redouble their efforts and crush the curve like they did last spring.
Sunday too, Murphy tweeted that he and the governors of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware discussed how they can continue to work together “to fend off the second wave of COVID-19.”
