New Jets coach on Quinnen Williams: ‘game destroyer’

The New York Jets held the third pick in the 2018 and 2019 NFL Draft. In 2018, New York selected Southern Cal quarterback Sam Darnold. In 2019, the Jets selected Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

Introduced as head coach of New York on Thursday, Robert Saleh said he was “really, really excited” to see one of these players in his system, but it would be “premature” to comment on the other’s future with the Jets.

“Regarding this young man,” Saleh said reporters about Quinnen Williams, “his state of mind, his athleticism, his power, his love for football, really, really excited to see him in our system, especially up front and the way we design with it. that style of attack. “

Williams nearly doubled his rookie stats in 2020. Former high school star Wenonah had 55 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, 14 quarterback hits, three defenses and two forced fumbles in 13 games this season.

The only inside defensemen who matched Williams’ stats in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and quarterback hits in 2020 were DeForest Buckner of the Indianapolis Colts and Leonard Williams of the New York Giants, and Buckner played two more. games and Leonard Williams has played three more games than Quinnen Williams.

Saleh had spent the previous four seasons as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, so he got to see Williams in person on September 20, when the 49ers beat the Jets on 31 and 13. Williams recorded seven tackles and two sacks. in the game.

“This kid is special,” Saleh said Thursday during an appearance on “The Michael Kay Show” on WEPN-FM in New York City. “He’s a game destroyer. He’s someone you have to plan your game against to keep him at bay, and obviously that gives the other 10 guys the opportunity to excel just because of the focus.” that he will win.

Saleh also had good things to say about Darnold.

“What I can tell you when it comes to Sam is he has an incredible talent for the arms,” Saleh said. “There’s a reason he was No. 3 in the draft. He’s fearless in the pocket. He has a natural throwing motion. He is mobile. He is extremely intelligent. He’s hard as nails. His reputation in the locker room is indisputable.

But Saleh made no commitment to Darnold when asked if the incumbent would be the team’s No.1 quarterback entering training camp for the 2021 season.

“There are a lot of things we need to do to move forward,” Saleh said. “We’re just getting the staff into the building, so there’s so much we have to do from a top notch assessment in terms of the whole roster, not just the quarterback. Giving you that answer now would not be fair. There is a lot of discussion to be had with the staff of (General Manager) Joe (Douglas) and obviously himself, and so giving you that answer now would be a bit premature.

The Jets posted a 2-14 record for the 2020 season, which sent coach Adam Gase fired after two seasons and nabbed the second pick in the 2021 NFL Draft for New York.

Saleh said his preliminary assessment was that the Jets had “a lot of good pieces.”

“I believe there is a lot of talent on this list,” Saleh said. “How these different elements fit into the programs we are about to roll out will be decided here in the coming weeks.
