New Mexico Lobos set to hire Richard Pitino as men’s basketball coach, sources say

Richard Pitino will be out of work for less than a day.

Pitino, who was sacked by Minnesota on Monday night, is expected to be named New Mexico’s next head coach, sources told ESPN.

An official announcement is expected soon.

Pitino spent eight seasons in Minnesota, competing in two NCAA tournaments. The Golden Gophers have finished one game under 0.500 in each of the past two seasons and have lost seven straight games to end the last regular season, escaping the NCAA tournament.

Prior to taking over from the Golden Gophers, Pitino spent a season as a head coach at the FIU and was an assistant coach in Louisville, Fla., Duquesne, the Northeast and Charleston.

Pitino would replace Paul Weir, fired after four seasons at Albuquerque. The Lobos haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 2014.
