Fierro told KOAT that a man was screaming from the second floor window of the apartment complex with the baby and toddler hanging on the window. The rest of the construction team brought ladders when Fierro ordered him to drop off his children.
"He let go, I caught him, then they brought another little boy of two or three years, then we caught him too," said Fierro.
Lt. Tom Ruiz, a spokesman for the rescue service in Albuquerque, told CNN that the fire had sent three people to the hospital. The two children were taken to the hospital by the family and one person by ambulance for smoke inhalation. All are in a stable state, Ruiz said.
The apartment complex was "a total loss", he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Ruiz said that although the firefighters were on site within five minutes, he was happy that Fierro and the other workers reacted quickly.
"Those people who urgently needed help could not wait on us," Ruiz said.
Fierro said that he should not be the only one to receive praise because he could not have done it without the help of the rest of the crew.
"These children are alive because of what construction workers did quickly and concisely," said Ruiz.
Ruiz also said that the fire department did not recommend attempting a rescue operation without the proper equipment.
"It's something we'd like them to leave us," he said. "These building workers already had equipment … They made the decision to act and this may be more recommended than anything else."
