Almost a decade after its release like a little mess on PS3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PS5 can now be played at 60 FPS thanks to the work of one of the game’s console modders.

Created by a modder who goes by Wrighton, “Skyrim @ 60fps” is exactly what it says on the tin, unlocking the game’s framerate on PS5 for the standard 30 FPS booster. I downloaded and installed the mod yesterday, immediately noticed Skyrim was working great, and found myself sucked into scouring snowy hills in search of weird NPCs and moral consequences.

“It was done using Bethesda’s Creation Kit to create mods, but using a little trick in the software (which I did a video on my YouTube channel about), which allows initialization / config / .ini files to be downloaded on the PS4 platform, much like with Xbox or PC, ”Wrighton said Kotaku in an email. “It works by changing a single value in Skyrimconfiguration file, which the game reads on startup. Thus allowing the game to run at 60 fps instead of 30. “

Skyrim received similar treatment on Xbox Series X last month, with mods also increasing the frame rate on that console to 60 FPS. Uncapped framerate mods seem to have been around on Xbox for quite some time now, but it wasn’t until next-gen consoles arrived that gamers were able to reap the benefits without sending hardware into a frenzy. (Interesting way, Digital Foundry reported this Skyrim ran at a more consistent improved frame rate on the Xbox Series S than on the X.)

An added bonus with Wrighton’s mod is that it can be disabled and still run, allowing players to earn trophies while playing at the higher frame rate. Choosing dozens of locks to get the Thief Trophy has never been so responsive.
