New model PS5 is lighter, has better screw

An unannounced hardware overhaul of the PlayStation 5, first noticed in Australia by Press Start, brings two changes to Sony’s console. First, the new model, CFI-1102A, weighs 0.6 pounds less than the original console, although Sony has given no indication of what has changed. In May, reports revealed that a new wireless module was planned, and that’s likely what’s inside those modified consoles. The update applies to both digital and disk versions.

Second, and most importantly, there’s a new screw for the annoying and required console base / stand. While the screw is not needed when the system is placed in a horizontal position (there is a small compartment to store the screw), anyone installing a PS5 vertically will need the screw to keep the mount stable. The revised screw can be tightened by hand with a new handle around the head. While it doesn’t make it easy to align the base / stand, you no longer need a screwdriver to perform the operation.

The console, plagued by a scalper market since its launch, remains in short supply. A quick glance at eBay auctions shows that the new PS5s are still hovering around $ 700 to $ 900, well above the MSRP of $ 400 to $ 500, depending on the edition. Apps like StockInformer can alert those still trying to find one, minus the reseller premium.
