According to new tests, the new PS5 model actually performs better than the launch model, contrary to recent reports. Sony last month modified the PS5 and in doing so removed the heatsink from the launch model and replaced it with a smaller heatsink, leading many to believe that the new model was a downgrade by compared to the launch model. However, the aforementioned tests suggest otherwise. Not only was there no derating, but the test results actually show an improvement in temperature regulation.
The test comes from the Hardware Busters International YouTube channel and the German site Igorslab, and it is quite comprehensive and conclusive. As you might expect, there isn’t much of a difference between the launch model’s cooling and the new model, however, there are some slight differences, many of which favor the latter.
Below you can check the test and its results for yourself:
So far, there is a lot of conflicting information about the new PS5 model, but it seems like the most comprehensive test yet. That said, for now, take it with a grain of salt until further testing is provided. And of course, if you’re worried about missing something, don’t be, because the improvements are marginal in the grand scheme of things. What is most important to keep your PS5 running cool is taking care of it and making sure that dust does not collect on the fans. Most PS4 consoles that run really hard run hard due to dust buildup.
At the time of publication, Sony has not said a word about the new PS5 model and the changes it makes to cooling. At this point it’s unlikely to happen, but if it provides any official information, we’ll make sure to update the story accordingly.
