Oculus has started rolling out a set of new software features for the Quest and Quest 2 VR headsets. The v32 update introduces some minor but important changes to the user experience in the headset, as well as to the app’s application. Oculus Move health tracking. The feature that caught my attention the most was an option to automatically sync recorded photos and videos captured in VR with the Oculus mobile app for iOS and Android.
In an earlier update, Oculus allowed you to download files from a headset through the Browser app in VR, an improvement over the original method of plugging the headset into a PC. But this update takes it a step further by removing the friction for viewing or sharing content, as it allows you to do so without a headset. To sync the items on your headset (running v32 software, of course) with the app for the first time, open the Files app from your Quest’s app library in the headset, then click the cloud icon that will appear in its upper right corner. It will ask you to activate the sync function. Once you’re done, your clips and photos will be viewable and shareable in the “Devices” pane of the Oculus mobile app.
Oculus has made a few other changes, including the ability to offer apps and games while you’re wearing a headset. Previously (and it’s frustrating) giveaways had to be done through the Oculus app or through a browser, but now you can do it all in one place.
If you enjoy chatting with your Oculus friends in VR, you’ll soon find these contacts in the “People” tab of Facebook Messenger in VR, not a separate section. Oculus contacts will be placed in the same list as your Facebook friends, but Oculus says friends you made in VR won’t be able to see Facebook activity unless you add them as friends on Facebook, they therefore remain separate despite the way this may appear in the app.
Oculus said The edge that will be the new setup for anyone who installs v32 software, although you can use a filter that can show your Oculus or Facebook friends instead of both.
Finally, Oculus is making changes to its Move fitness platform which can monitor your movements in games to report metrics, much like a fitness tracker does. Instead of just tracking daily goals, Oculus has added a new weekly goal metric that lets you select how many days you want to work in VR each week. It also allows you to share the Oculus Move workout stats that you are proud of on your Facebook calendar, groups or in Messenger.
Updated August 23 at 4:47 p.m. ET: Oculus clarified that while all Quest users who have v32 software will see their Oculus and Facebook friends listed together in Messenger in VR, they will be able to use a filter in Messenger to view Oculus or Facebook friends.
