New Orleans police chief’s son accused of beating officer

The son of New Orleans Police Commissioner Shaun D. Ferguson was arrested Friday and charged with beating a law enforcement officer, the department said.

Shane Ferguson, 24, was convicted of trespassing, assault, assault and battery against police and “criminal damage to property,” the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement.

Officers responded to a 10-hour report of a disturbance and found Shane Ferguson “in a verbal altercation and threatening Water and Sewer Board employees,” the department said.

NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans reported Shane Ferguson works for the utility, which serves the city.

“While detaining the subject, he resisted arrest, inflicting minor injuries on an officer who responded,” the police department said.

Representatives of the Water and Sewer Board did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

NBC News couldn’t find Shane Ferguson’s contact details on Friday night. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office listed him Friday night as an inmate without bail.

Young Ferguson was tried on a domestic battery charge more than two years ago after an incident in which police said they hit his ex-girlfriend. The case was closed by the Orléans parish prosecutor after the woman decided at the last minute not to testify, the prosecutor’s office said.

Shane Ferguson had pleaded not guilty.
