Overwatch 2 had a smaller presence at BlizzConline than some of Blizzard Entertainment’s other games – in part because the game is still a long way off – but the Overwatch team didn’t come empty-handed. During the show, Blizzard took a look behind the scenes of the sequel to Overwatch, including new looks for the heroes and villains of this game.
Blizzard highlighted the design revisions of four characters: McCree, Pharah, Reaper, and Widowmaker. In some cases, the changes are not particularly drastic; McCree still wears his cowboy hat and serape, but he, like the others Overwatch 2 characters, has a slightly more technical look to him. Oh, and his beard is a bit longer – everyone’s beard is longer, apparently.
And then there’s Widowmaker. As you can see in the gallery below, Blizzard tried out a few more dramatic looks for the sniper. Blizzard ultimately went for something a little more “cyberpunk”, according to lead character concept artist Arnold Tsang.
Widowmaker is also wearing a braid now … and questionable armor plating.
Pharah retains his full armor, but has a more translucent visor to show more emotion, Tsang said, and a bit more white in his color scheme. As for Reaper, he keeps the same edgelord silhouette and style, but now has a more silvery look. But if not, heroes and villains Overwatch 2 retain many elements of their original designs.
Overwatch 2 does not yet have a release date, but Activision Blizzard has said they won’t wait for the game in 2021.
