New patents have surfaced for virtual environments and session management

GTA’s next installment might be quite a distance away, but new information has been revealed regarding new patents that appear to be related to Rockstar Games.

A Twitter user Big Jim Colosimo discovered some new patents published by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games concerning virtual environments and a new session management system for online titles.

Virtual environments – what does it mean?

What this means in particular, the virtual environment patent points to a new form of navmesh generated for NPCs (it controls where NPCs are allowed to go) and it may appear that artificial intelligence may also play a role in the next title, so there’s more Rockstar is likely to be running dedicated servers rather than localized hardware.

It would also benefit consoles as most of the AI would be handled on servers, so if this is implemented in the next title Rockstar should be able to take the game even further beyond it. ‘IA, and therefore will not be pushed back by hardware limitations. .

With that in mind, the next game launches into an advanced AI system (again) for NPCs, as we saw similarly with Red Dead Redemption II (2018) which introduced daily routines and improvements, which was a major step up from GTA V from 2013.

Being alone in the next GTA Online title could be even more difficult with a new patent that demonstrates that there may be a new system that merges sessions without any action on the player.

This technology is somewhat already used in Red Dead Online but this patent shows that it could be even further advanced to populate the sessions as much as possible. This feature could also eliminate some loading screens if a player wants to join a friend’s session, as the game would switch sessions seamlessly as nothing was happening. Or if a player is kicked out of an online session, the game will seamlessly enter player X into a different session without any effects or loading screens.

For now, take all of this information with a grain of salt. Companies can often publish patents without certain things ever appearing in a final product.
