The new Pixel 6 leaks reveal a huge leap over Google’s current Pixel 5, including a huge camera upgrade.

The news comes from serial leaker Jon Prosser, who presents a list of what he believes are the “full final specs” of Google’s next-gen Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro flagships.

The list includes details of a brand new 50-megapixel camera, intended to appear in both the Pixel 6 and the larger Pixel 6 Pro. If its sources are correct, it would represent an unprecedented leap in camera specs for the Pixel line which has steadfastly focused on relatively modest 12-megapixel sensors since its debut in 2016.

Here are the specifications of the two models according to Prosser:

Pixel 6

  • Screen size: 6.4 inch
  • Display: AMOLED
  • Rear camera configuration: 50 MP (wide) + 12 MP (ultra wide)
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 4614 mAh
  • Processor: Google
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 128 GB / 256 GB
  • Operating system: Android 12

Pixel 6 Pro

  • Screen size: 6.71 inch
  • Display: Plastic OLED
  • Rear camera configuration: 50MP (Wide) + 48MP (Tele) + 12MP (Ultra Wide)
  • Front camera: 12 MP
  • Battery: 5000mAh
  • Processor: Google
  • RAM: 12 GB
  • Storage: 128GB / 256GB / 512GB
  • Operating system: Android 12

Both models represent a big step forward in hardware over the Pixel 5, but it’s clear that you’ll have to go for the larger Pixel 6 Pro if you want the best cameras, as the standard model doesn’t have a telephoto lens and also comes with a selfie camera -resolution. This will undoubtedly disappoint the many users who don’t like huge handsets.

It had been a long time since Google had produced a truly revolutionary smartphone. Instead, the company saw fit to add and remove features at will, while arguing over whether a telephoto or ultra-wide lens is more important.

Of course, the competition thankfully gave us both and as a result left the Pixel far behind, at least in terms of flexible shooting options. Now, with the Pixel 6 Pro, it looks like Google is finally ready to catch up.

Despite the historic hardware handicap of Google’s self-imposed camera, the Pixel has built a solid reputation for cutting-edge image quality and this is almost entirely due to the outstanding image processing software in smartphones.

With that in mind, I have long wondered what the Pixel could achieve if it was also equipped with state-of-the-art photo equipment. Now, it looks like the Pixel 6 Pro is about to deliver that answer.

Prosser expects both models to appear “around October 2021” with “at least 5 years of software updates” for both devices, an unprecedented development in the Android world and comparable to what we expect from it. Apple iPhone.
