Since 2017, the Google Camera app is home to fun AR stickers that let you animate photos and videos. Later rebranded as Playground, Google is dropping support for these Playmoji characters on future Pixel devices, starting with the Pixel 4a.
The “Playground” mode is absent from the Pixel 4a. It no longer appears when you switch to the “More” tab of Google Camera. Users were previously taken to a separate interface where tapping the stickers button to the left of the shutter drag a sheet with multiple tabs. Under “Playmoji” you can browse and download the available packs.
Once installed, you tap to overlay in your viewfinder. Some characters, especially in selfie mode, automatically react to what is in the scene and your gestures. Meanwhile, you can also place animated 2D stickers, as well as floating signs with personalized messages.
Google confirmed to us today that the absence of Playground on the Pixel 4a is planned. You can weirdly install the Playground app, but nothing will happen.
In the future, future Pixel phones will no longer be equipped with Playmoji. In a statement, the company reaffirms its commitment to the underlying ARCore technology and “great AR experiences”.
We continue to bring ARCore and its latest features to the Pixel 4a and many other ARCore-enabled devices. Playground will still be supported on older Pixel devices, and we will focus our efforts on creating great AR experiences that serve a much larger audience.
Playground will remain on existing devices launched with AR stickers, like the Pixel 4, 3a, and all previous pixels. It has also been available for select LG and Motorola phones since last year.
However, notable playmoji of Star wars, Strange things, Detective Pikachu, and Childish Gambino are no longer available on the Play Store. Only Google packs remain today: weather, pets, Japanese phrases, travel, love, sports, signs, food, and winter.
Going forward, Google says it is focusing on “AR experiences that serve a much wider audience.” This probably refers to the very popular 3D animals in Google search. Taking advantage of ARCore, it is available on most modern Android devices, iPhones and iPads.
