New poll shows exaggeration in California recall election

New poll data released this week revealed voters are almost evenly split on the recall vote for the governor of California. The Emerson College – Nexstar poll found that 46% of voters were in favor of the recall vote against Newsom, while 48% said they were against. The remaining six percent said they were undecided.

Emerson College noted that the percentage of undecided voters fell three percent, while those in favor of the recall rose three percent.

The majority of Republicans and Independents were in favor of Newsom’s recall with 80% of the 54% respectively saying they would vote to remove it.

A division by education level was apparent in the results, as those without a college degree were largely in favor of the recall at 54 percent compared to the 39 percent who were against. Among respondents with a college education, 36 percent said they were in favor of the recall while 59 percent opposed.

Along gender lines, men were evenly split at 47%, while women were slightly in favor of keeping Newsom at 51% versus 44%.

Among racial groups, black and Asian voters were in favor of keeping Newsom. White voters were also divided, and a majority of Hispanic voters said they would vote to remove Newsom.

Asked what they thought were the main issues California faces today, voters said homelessness was the main issue with housing, COVID-19, crime and the environment.
