A new PS5 DualSense controller teardown video has claimed it has a lifespan of “417 hours” until stick drift kicks in.
Those lucky enough to get their hands on a PS5 may have noticed that it’s not all sugar and rainbows with Sony’s powerful new console. Some players have reported that the dreaded stick drift phenomenon reared its ugly head, which seriously affected the gaming experience.
This prompted some YouTube channels to review the first PS5 DualSense controller teardown videos to see why that might be the case.
The iFixit YouTube channel recently uploaded a new video to explore the DualSense, with results showing that the controller only has about 417 hours of use until it begins to have an effect on the controllers of the controller.
The video shares a look at the controller and gives us some details about ALPS, which is the manufacturer of the joystick parts, and the results indicate that the expected life for the sticks is 2,000,000 cycles and the click on the analog stick will last. about 500,000 cycles.
What does this mean exactly? Well, the video above does an analysis of those cycles and translates them into something a little more digestible. According to iFixit’s analysis using Call of Duty: Warzone as a test, this could mean that a controller has around 417 hours until the stick life cycle hits its peak.
To put that in more perspective, if you were to play your PS5 console for just two hours a day, you would get around seven months of your controller use before you started noticing drift. This is something that just happens with this joystick hardware because over time the general use of the controller will exhaust the faders which are usually what causes the drift to start.
Of course, the numbers above will be different for everyone depending on the games you play. It’s also important to note that something like Call of Duty: Warzone, which requires a lot of movement and clicks, is going to be a heavy workout on your controller, especially if you’re playing it for several hours at a time.
The most disturbing part of it all, however, is that those who watched the early PS5 controller teardown videos knew it already was.
A previous iFixit teardown video made it clear that the gamepads inside the DualSense are the same as the PS4 controller, using technology also used in the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. All of these controllers have experienced some form of joystick drift over the years, most notably the PS4 DualShock and Nintendo’s JoyCons.
If you are experiencing joystick drift with your DualSense controller, the channel lists a few options that you have open. First, you can either try to fix it yourself, send it in for repair, or try talking to Sony if the controller is still under warranty. However, if none of these options work, you may need to purchase a brand new DualSense.
