It looks like the new PS5 firmware update released last week may improve your console’s performance slightly.
The performance improvement was initially spotted by Digital Foundry as it tested the heat differences between newer and older PS5 models (ultimately they work pretty much the same, thermally speaking). These initial tests were done while the new PS5 update was still in beta, but Digital Foundry performed further testing after its public release and found that the improvements remained consistent.
“In very selected scenarios, it seems that all PlayStation 5s are running faster than they used to be with this new firmware,” said Richard Leadbetter, editor of Digital Foundry, in the DF Direct’s latest weekly chat video. “Only a few percentage points, I think it’s like 3% max, but you can have a 1% margin of error there.”
Testing indicated that “fringe scenarios” such as ray tracing seemed particularly affected by the firmware update, with the test case sets being Control and Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition.
These performance differences are so minor that there’s a good chance you’ll never notice an extra frame or two per second without specifically putting new and old firmware side by side. Even still, it’s encouraging to see Sony squeezing more performance out of its next-gen console as it approaches its one-year anniversary.
