New Raiders star Johnathon Abram is probably lost for the season

Johnathon Abram, the safety rookie of the Oakland Raiders, who was already compared to the great Charles Woodson, could be lost for the season.

NFL Network Tom Pelissero reported that "Abram was to be placed on the reserve for injured with a shoulder injury requiring surgery. Adam Lefkoe from Bleacher Report reported that Abram had a broken rotator cuff and labrum during Monday night's game.

IR automatically places a player for eight weeks, but Abram will likely take much longer to recover from an operation at the shoulder. Chances are, he will not return to the field until next season.

The loss of Abram is a major setback for the Raiders, who had one of the most porous defenses of the NFL last season. The choice of the first round of the Raiders was impressive during the pre-season and had a strong debut on Monday against the Broncos. He had five tackles and a defended pass.

In one of his games, Abram met his teammate Gareon Conley as he attempted to tackle Denver midfielder Royce Freeman. Conley was hurt at the neck and left the match, but he tweeted on Tuesday that he was "good to go".

"I think he (Abram) has probably become a bit too reckless at times," Raiders head coach Jon Gruden told reporters after Monday's win. "He has made good games, impact games … I think some tackle that he has to do for us – he missed it … his debut was very good."

Abram was featured in HBO's "Hard Knocks" and pulled some moderate criticism from his coach for hitting teammates while they were not wearing pads.

"He even hit coaches the other day by accident," said Gruden. "But he likes to play and if we had three days a day as before, he would be first in line for all those people."
