The action comes after President Joseph Biden signed the Democrats’ coronavirus stimulus package, which authorized a third round of stimulus payments to millions of Americans since the start of the pandemic.
“Even though tax season is in full swing, IRS employees have once again been working around the clock to quickly bring aid to the millions of Americans struggling to cope with this historic pandemic,” he said. IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said in a statement.
In a call with reporters, officials said they did not yet have many statistics on payments, such as how many were already heading for the door.
The government has improved in the distribution of stimulus checks, with the last cycle approved by Congress in December being much faster than the first approved earlier last year.
Payments will generally be larger than in previous cycles, although slightly fewer people will receive them.
They are generally reserved for people earning less than $ 75,000 and couples twice as much, with $ 1,400 for each person, including all dependents claimed on a return. A family of four, for example, will receive $ 5,600.
Lawmakers have somewhat restricted the criteria for receiving them, so some people who received payments earlier might not be eligible for it. Eligibility wears off faster as income increases than with previous rounds, so couples earning over $ 160,000 and singles earning over $ 80,000 will not receive payments.
Eligibility will generally be based on what people report on their 2020 tax returns, if these have already been processed by the IRS. If not, the agency will look at returning people in 2019 or, for non-filers, what information they previously provided to the ministry to receive previous rounds of stimulus checks.
Starting Monday, people can check the status of their payments on the IRS website, using the “Get My Payment” tool.
