Recent rumors have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will support the S Pen stylus, but without the location found in the Samsung Note series of phones where it is typically housed. Thanks to a new leak, we know where it could be stored: in an external folio case mounted around the S21 Ultra.
Housing the S Pen in a case isn’t the most elegant solution, but it keeps the stylus handy without the need for a drastic redesign of the S21 Ultra – after which it would look like a Note phone. The cases, shown in photos acquired by tech site WinFuture and tweeted by Roland Quandt, look like standard phone cases, although it looks like the S Pen snaps onto the left side of the S21 Ultra, with the folio wrapped around :
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra gets an optional S Pen, which makes the Galaxy Note series a bit outdated. Here’s your first official look at the new stylus and how Samsung will let you carry it in the official Clear View and silicone cases: https://t.co/HtAuyoVrfiJanuary 4, 2021
It’s a bit difficult to see, and we rely on WinFuture’s interpretation of the images and the corresponding information. The S Pen is indeed more like the stylus that came with the Galaxy Tab S7, without the top button on the Samsung Note 20 series stylus, although you can still press the back like a button, say, to pause, or read media. And yes, gesture controls will be expected to come back.
The leak suggests that the S Pen will be sold separately at a cost (allegedly less than € 40) in line with the Note 20’s stylus ($ 39 / £ 34 / around AU $ 50) or included with said case, which can be called the S. View Flip. Blanket.

S21 Ultra: the case for an S Pen
Early rumors suggested the S21 would support the S Pen, but renderings and images did not show a slot in the device to house the stylus (as in Note 20), casting doubt on the possibility that the newer ones phones support the accessory. . Further leaks suggested that only the S21 Ultra would be compatible with the S Pen, but again, there doesn’t appear to be any design changes from last year’s Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra to accommodate a stylus.
The new leaked images of the cases explain the absence of the S Pen: As with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 and Tab S7 tablets, the stylus could simply be slipped into the case for easy carrying. Not as stylish as the Note series, but a usable solution, especially for the types of power users who can afford the probably very high price of an S21 Ultra.
Still, it’s not entirely clear why the S21 and S21 Plus might not also be compatible with the S Pen, although there is apparently enough hardware difference that the 26ms pen latency of the Note 20 is not as advanced as that of the 9ms of the Note 20 Ultra. . Perhaps it wasn’t economical to bend the stylus login screen and internal tech in the lower-tier S21 phones … although that’s also a feather in the S21 Ultra’s cap to justify its surely higher price.
