People across the country are reporting a new side effect of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, calling it “Moderna Arm.”
What is happening?
According to KDKA (via Boston.com), doctors and medical officials recently said they saw patients with a strange reaction to their arm.
One woman described the reaction as if someone had ripped a bandage off your arm.
- “It was a big rectangle, 2 1/2 to 3 inches long, maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide,” patient Genese Hendrickson told KDKA. “He left that mark where there would be bubbles and red. It itched.
Dr James DeAngelo, who works for Allergy and Clinical Immunology Associates, told KDKA that this is a normal reaction to vaccination.
- “It’s kind of an immune reaction,” he says. “It’s technically not an allergy. It is hypersensitivity. We just don’t know the mechanism yet.
That said, some men have reported seeing their spot become an oval, hard and hot. But it looks like the reaction will die down within a week.
Wait, isn’t that this “COVID arm”?
It is not entirely new. I wrote about this reaction – which has been dubbed the “COVID arm” – in February. At the time, people said they saw red lesions on their arms after receiving Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, according to Health.com. The rash would develop near the injection site of the arm.
- “A lot of people have called me about the injection site, and sometimes it stretches quite far down the arm too,” Dr. John Swartzberg, infectious disease expert at the University of California, Berkeley School of public health, told KOMO News.
Experts said the reaction is called “delayed skin hypersensitivity,” according to Health.com. The rash is a sign of a delayed reaction to the injection.
But Dr George Morris told CBS Minnesota there was nothing to worry about.
- “We have seen reactions like this even with other vaccines,” he said. “We know that when you get the flu shot, many people will have a local reaction in their arm. Tetanus vaccines. Shingles vaccines. “
