New trailers: Land, The Human Voice and Pretend It’s a City

The best thing I’ve watched in 2021 so far is the Ratatouille TikTok musical, it’s lovely, and the performances – by some big Broadway stars – are great. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet (prices are on a payment scale), there is still time; it will air until January 4. Proceeds from the Notes benefit Actors Fund, a charitable cause. Be warned that songs will definitely get stuck in your head, just like any good musical number does.

In other news I just started Bridgerton… will report. Saucy so far.

It’s kind of a slim pick this week for the new trailers, but I’ve found a few interesting ones that all feature strong female protagonists, a nice tone to set for 2021.

Pretend it’s a town

It’s no secret that Fran Lebowitz has thoughts on a lot of things, including his hometown of New York. Martin Scorsese made this documentary starring the legendary essayist doing what she does best: nodding. She talks about tourists, Times Square, real estate, and notes that “it would take a subway ride for the Dalai Lama to turn into a madman and a madman.” Pretend it’s a town debuts on Netflix on January 8.

Human voice

Director Pedro Almodovar makes his English debut with Human voice, a 30-minute short film based on Jean Cocteau’s one-act play of the same name. Tilda Swinton plays a woman who waits for her ex to come back to pick up her luggage (metaphor alert) but he never shows up. I’m pretty much for everything that has Tilda in it. Human voice should be released later this year.

Earth

Robin Wright directed and stars in this film about a woman who ventures into the wilds of the Rocky Mountains to escape tragedy – the trailer suggests it has to do with the loss of a child. She underestimates how brutal and difficult it will be to survive on her own and is saved by a local hunter played by Demian Bichir. Earth is set to hit theaters on February 12 (although that seems likely with all that could be pushed back).
