So besides watching Ted lasso, missing Loki on Wednesdays, and keeping my Paramount Plus subscription up to date so I can watch the hugely underrated show The good fight, I’m still working Manifest. I’m halfway through season 2, and the plot has gotten weirdly elaborate and yet the show remains so cheesy that I have to see how things end. Of course, we’re waiting for a word from Netflix on whether there will be any seasons after the show’s third, but recent developments look promising.
Let’s move on to the latest trailers:
Y: The last man
The highly anticipated show based on Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s comic book series of the same name is finally here. All the mammals in the world with a Y chromosome are suddenly wiped out, except for a dude named Yorick (alas) and his pet monkey, and chaos ensues, of course. Ben Schnetzer, Ashley Romans, Olivia Thirlby and Diane Lane star in the series Y: The last man (which FX says would have all-female directors). It arrives on FX on Hulu on September 13.
Venom: let there be carnage
There’s a lot of carnage in this 2018 sequel Venom, but the title also makes reference to Carnage, the former serial killer who also becomes the host of an alien symbiote and (our hero?) the enemy of Venom. Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams and Naomie Harris star in Venom: let there be carnage, directed by Andy Serkis. It will hit theaters this fall.

I’ve grumbled before about the difference between (short) teasers and (longer) trailers, but here is the “date announcement”. At some point we’ll likely have a teaser and / or trailer for Season 2 of the Very Funny and Steamy Great, but for now, we get Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult exchanging jokes in period costume. Great returns to Hulu on November 19.
Army of thieves
Of all the characters in Zack Snyder’s summer zombie movie Army of the dead to get a prequel, Safecracking Dieter … wasn’t the first one I thought of. Here, it’s a bank teller who is drawn into a criminal ring that wants to break safes across Europe (and he’s heard of the epidemic in America turning people into flesh-eating monsters). And for info the trailer, sorry the teaser, only shows zombies in the “reports”. Co-written by Snyder and directed by Dieter himself, aka Matthias Schweighöfer, Army of thieves also stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Ruby O. Fee. No release date yet, but it’s coming to Netflix soon.
Kate
An assassin is poisoned just before hitting an Asian villain, and she has a few hours to find out who killed her. I don’t know if it’s that the plot of the “murdering lady” sounds familiar and a little tired, or if it’s just particularly unsettling to see a white woman killing a lot of Asians onscreen then. that there has been a slight increase in violence against AAPI people in the real world, but this trailer doesn’t quite do that for me. Maybe I’m wrong (we know this happens) after all, this is only two minutes and 45 seconds of the movie. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Woody Harrelson and Miku Martineau star in Kate, which will be released on Netflix on September 10.
