A new video from the team over at VICE News takes a deep dive into one of the most fascinating yet often overlooked aspects of video games: the sound design. In particular, this video addresses one of the most recognizable franchises in video game history: Mortal Kombat.

In the video, the VICE team heads to the NetherRealm Studios in Chicago where they spoke with Senior Sound Designer Stephen Schappler about cringe-inducing sound, ripping them limb from limb. Turns out, a lot of it is built upon the destruction of produce. Y'know, green peppers, grapefruits, walnuts, and the like.

For those interested in the behind-the-scenes workings of a video game, this is a really great peek into this world. It's rather fascinating to think that we hear a few dollars at the grocery store … and, y'know, tens of thousands of dollars of studio equipment, plug-ins, software, training, research, etc …
