New World Barebones Quests Almost A Parody Of An MMO

I’m still immersed in the New World, cutting and mining to make my way through the landscape, but the more I play the more I wonder… is that right? Is something going to arrive in this game?

Don’t get me wrong, I find it extremely calming to improve fishing, harvesting, and crafting etc as it reminds me of the old school days of Runescape. I think the combat is quite fluid and fun and I enjoy the different types of weapons. The game also seems to have a lot going on on a larger scale PvP.

But in terms of actual quests, I feel like I’ve done the same quest dozens, hundreds of times before. Even the main story quest has so far resembled all the level 25 side quests. Many will say “oh, MMOs are cranky and repetitive, that’s how it is,” and yet the New World quests? It almost sounds like a parody of the genre.

There are only a small handful of goals all of these quests will never ask you:

  • Press E on X number of highlighted objects in an area.
  • Look for X number of chests in an area.
  • Find X newspaper pages in an area.
  • Kill and loot X number of enemies in an area.
  • Kill a central boss in an area (which is probably being cultivated by ten other people).

That’s… 98% of the quests in the game. I’m not exaggerating. It relies on the fact that New World is essentially devoid of anything that looks like a story. People will tell me to “read the pages of the newspaper!” and yet if you do, every variation of them is like “What Happened in Hartham – The Corruption Happened Quickly and Quickly.” Little Timmy turned first, then the others “and the whole place is zombie infested now, the end. You can only read a certain number of versions before you stop bothering.”

I’ve found maybe two exceptions to this so far, the “public event” type mini-quests that allow you to clear corrupted areas of enemies. And then there are “Expeditions” that take you into a small dungeon, although these are mostly just… take out all the enemies inside. And these are problematic because it’s just like 50 people sitting outside the door, because they force you to have a team, so you’ll spam random group invites and hope people respond and are knowledgeable enough to empty the dungeon. To do with friends, certainly.

This is where people will explain to me the difference between a Sandbox MMO and a Theme Park MMO, where Sandbox is more about the grind and players making their own stories, and the Theme Park ones are more about in-game events. and rely more on a real story. But in 50 hours, this game hasn’t delivered more than one cutscene to me, and again I’m not exaggerating when I literally say that almost every quest in the game looks like a random combination of the above objectives. .

If the whole game is like this, and it never changes apart from a handful of Expeditions and Raids, I don’t know how many more I can do. For now, I’m still quite addicted to leveling and gearing to keep going, but man, it’s as simple as it gets when it comes to the quest structure and storytelling inside.
