NEW YORK (CBSNew York) – Plans for the New York Auto Show to take place in person have come to a screeching halt.

Organizers cited “the growing incidences of the COVID-19 Delta variant and the increased measures recently announced by state and local authorities to stop its spread.”

As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reports, on the large electronic billboard outside the Javits Center, the advertisement for the New York International Auto Show was still running, but now you can add the word ” canceled ”.

“It’s really disappointing,” said tourist Pedro Sanchez.

The brakes have been put on this event, which was due to start on August 20, with show organizers claiming to blame it on the growing spread of the Delta variant and the recent restrictions announced by the city and state.

COVID VACCINE

“I think they could have handled a little bit of work and made it happen,” Sanchez said.

“But they didn’t,” Carlin said.

“They didn’t,” Sanchez said.

Mandate from Mayor Bill de Blasio that proof of vaccination must be presented by all customers of bars, restaurants, gyms and cinemas before they can enter.

It officially begins next month.

Amanda Toliver of West Harlem calls this a pressure tactic. She is not vaccinated and her 11-year-old daughter, Jada, is three months behind on eligibility.

” I have not received it yet. My mom did it, other family members did, but I haven’t done it yet, ”Toliver said.

“And that will prevent you from going to the theater, to the restaurant, what do you think of that?” Carlin asked.

“I’m just going to go with the punches,” Toliver said. “I’ll just be home, I’ll just be home until I decide to get the shot.”

De Blasio clarified the mandates for children too young to be vaccinated.

“If you go out with your whole family and your children are not yet of vaccination age, they can of course accompany you,” de Blasio said during his daily press briefing.

Rudy’s Bar and Grill in Hell’s kitchen reopened this week after it closed at the start of the pandemic.

“Why was it 16 months? Carlin asked.

“Because of social distancing. We didn’t want to open with restrictions and we didn’t want to change our business model. So we just waited and we’re open now, ”Deputy Director Nils Hagstrom said. “It’s confusing. It can be a little frustrating, but we’ll do what we have to do.

The mayor said he expects more details when this vaccination policy is finalized next week.

“As custodians of the 121-year-old New York Auto Show, we are committed to providing a safe environment for everyone, including attendees, exhibitors and the thousands of men and women who organize the salon. Over the past few weeks, and particularly over the past few days, circumstances have changed, making it more difficult to create an event at the high level that we and our customers expect, ”wrote the organizers of the Auto Show. .

They said they expect the show to return as normal in April 2022.
