Eight people were injured after a tandem city bus crashed and were left hanging from a New York City overpass Thursday night.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. after the driver was “unable to navigate the carriageway” on the Cross Bronx Freeway at University Avenue, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department told NBC New York.
Photos and video of the crash were shared on social media, showing the BX-35 bus divided – with the front suspended over the highway barrier and balanced on the road below.
One person was seriously injured in the crash, the New York Fire Department said in an email statement. Three people sustained non-fatal injuries and four others sustained minor injuries, they added.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, police told WNBC. No other vehicle or pedestrian was involved.
“The bus fell about 50 feet on the access road,” Deputy Fire Chief Paul Hopper, who oversaw the emergency medical treatment of those on board, said on Instagram.
“The patients suffered injuries consistent with falling from such a great height.”
Emergency services continued to work into the morning to ensure that “all fuel and other hazardous materials inside the vehicle” were secured before the bus could be lowered onto the road, the chief said. of the Acting Battalion Steven Moore.
It was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Tim Minton said. He added that the bus route usually requires the driver to take a left onto the freeway, but it was missed.
MTA safety and security chief Patrick Warren said the authority “is conducting a full investigation and will implement lessons learned to prevent this from happening again.”
“We are sure it was a terrifying incident for these customers on the bus. Our hearts go out to them with the hope that we can recover quickly,” Warren added.
