Mayor Bill de Blasio said the move was a response to the Capitol uprising.
New York City is breaking contracts with President Donald Trump’s eponymous company, a move that could cost the incumbent president millions of dollars in response to his role in inciting the insurgency on Capitol Hill.
The city will notify the Trump organization that it will cancel its agreements to operate the Central Park Carousel, Wollman and Lasker rinks and the Ferry Point golf course in the Bronx.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was acting under a clause allowing contract termination in the event of criminal activity.
“The president has instigated a rebellion against the United States government which has killed five people and threatened to derail the constitutional transfer of power,” de Blasio said. “New York City will not be associated with these unforgivable acts in any form, manner or form, and we are taking immediate action to terminate all contracts with the Trump Organization.”
“He dishonored New York City by his actions,” added the mayor.
The town’s legal advisor said the Ferry Point golf course’s contract was canceled because the deal was based on the hope that the course would attract a major golf tournament, which is now unlikely after the PGA of America withdrew its 2022 PGA Championship from Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ, over the weekend.
The Trump Organization pockets $ 17 million a year for the operation of the ice rinks, carousel and golf course.
When Trump was a presidential candidate, and later when he pushed a plan to rebuild the country’s infrastructure, he touted his success in taking over the leadership of Wollman Rink as an example of his business acumen.
“When I made the Wollman rink, it had been seven years since they could get it built. It would have been forever, they couldn’t have it built, and I did it in a few months at a price much lower, “Trump said in 2018.” We did it for a tiny fraction of the cost. “
Eric Trump, the president’s son and executive vice president of the Trump organization, said the company will challenge the city’s decision to cancel the contracts.
“New York City has no legal right to terminate our contracts and if it chooses to continue, it will owe the Trump organization more than $ 30 million,” said Eric Trump. “This is nothing more than political discrimination, and we plan to fight vigorously.”
