Daniel Royer scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season in the Red Bulls New York 2-1 win over New York City FC on Sunday in a controversial game.

Royer scored from the penalty spot before half-time to tie the game tied. He then scored quickly after a challenge in the 60th minute for his first multi-goal game in 2019. This victory allowed the Red Bulls (9-7-4, 31 points) to finish third in third place of the Eastern Conference Ranking.

Royer led the Red Bulls in the 60th minute on a stretch that left NYCFC to protest the decision to give the hosts a touch instead of a corner.

After the visitors cleared the ball, the assistant referee Corey Rockwell seemed to point his flag down towards the corner flag, corner signal. Red Bulls' Marc Rzatkowski quickly made the throw-in. Cristian Casseres Jr. went into the box, where Royer led past keeper Sean Johnson.

Johnson and several of his teammates pleaded with referee Alan Kelly after the goal, and Kelly and Rockwell held a chat, but the goal remained. According to the TV broadcast on FS1, Rockwell had in fact decided to take a corner, but Kelly then canceled the decision.

A little earlier, Royer's penalty equalized the game in the first minute of the break time in the first half. Kelly immediately pointed to the place as NYCFC Maxime Chanot surprised Brian White with an outstretched leg, while White was trying to shoot down Alex Muyl's center on the right. Royer kicked his shot in the upper left corner after Johnson's dive.

NYCFC had the head after seven minutes. After a come and go with Heber, Maxi Moralez sent the ball right on Anton Tinnerholm, who played his first shot. Heber ran over, lining his foot with his first contact under the crossbar and over the goal line.

This is Heber's seventh goal for New York City FC (7-3-8, 29 points), who lost a place in the sixth in the East with a second consecutive loss.

Before those losses, NYCFC had played 12 games without defeat, but it fell to 1-5-1 all-time in away games against rivals Hudson River.
