Gyms in New York City, which have remained closed for months even as the state moved forward in the fight against the coronavirus, will be allowed to reopen as of August 24, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said on Monday.
Mr Cuomo’s announcement came with several caveats: Gyms will be limited to one-third of their total capacity, people will need to wear masks indoors, and local governments will need to inspect facilities to ensure that ‘they meet the reopening requirements before being allowed to reopen. . Local governments can also prevent gyms within their jurisdiction from holding indoor classes, Cuomo said.
But the move marked an important step forward in returning the state to the pre-pandemic status quo, even as officials worried about a second wave of the virus.
Gyms and fitness centers have been closed in New York City since March 16, and statewide since March 22. the virus could spread there more easily.
