NEW ORLEANS – The “special player” that the New York Giants insist they have with quarterback Daniel Jones was playing on Sunday.
Jones put the Giants on his shoulders in a 27-21 win over the New Orleans Saints at the Caesars Superdome, rallying them to an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit against one of the league’s best defenses .
He finished with a career-high 402 passing yards and two touchdowns, and made several big throws on the overtime-winning drive that ended in a 6-yard touchdown by Saquon Barkley.
The Giants (1-3) needed it in a game they played without wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton and starting center linebacker Blake Martinez. They leaned on Jones to win their first game of the season.
“He had one hell of a game,” coach Joe Judge said of his quarterback.
Jones has played very well this season, with just two turnovers in four games. Turnovers are what hurt Jones in his first two professional seasons.
His teammates say the world is finally starting to see what they believe they already have with their quarterback.
“He showed them what we were [seeing]. Hope you started to see it too, ”Barkley said. “Since the day he was drafted, he has been criticized. This guy does nothing but come to work and improve and lead every day. He’s a competitor. He has shown today that he is a special player.
“We knew he was a special player.”
When the Giants needed it most in New Orleans, Jones validated Barkley’s beliefs. He made all the throws.

He scored 8 of 11 for 229 yards and two touchdowns with the interception of those shots against the Saints, setting career highs in passing completed and yards. He was 3 of 4 passing those shots in the fourth quarter and overtime in a performance that should open your eyes.
“This is my first year with him and I always say in the offseason that I see the work he does,” said Golladay. “I see how awesome he wants to be. Today he went there very competitive and he had a day.
