Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville, NY, will temporarily stop giving birth after several maternity workers resign due to a COVID-19 vaccination warrant, reported 7 News.
At least six maternity workers resigned because they did not want to be vaccinated. And seven others are undecided about it, according to Lewis County Health System General Manager Gerald Cayer.
The hospital will not be able to safely staff the unit, Cayer said at the point of sale, and will suspend service after Sept. 24.
“If we can suspend the service and now focus on recruiting vaccinated nurses, we can re-engage in childbirth here in Lewis County,” Cayer said.
Cayer told the outlet that he hopes the situation will be temporary. He plans to work with the state’s health ministry to ensure the maternity hospital does not close permanently.
According to Cayer, 165 employees have yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The other 464 hospital workers were vaccinated.
In a recent announcement, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo enforced a new policy to help fight the spread of COVID-19 in the state. The policy required that all healthcare workers in hospitals get vaccinated by September 27.
Cayer said the announcement prompted 30 employees to get vaccinated, while 30 others resigned.
“Our hope is that as we get closer (to the deadline) the number of individuals vaccinated will increase, fewer individuals will leave and perhaps, with any luck, some of those who have resigned will reconsider. their decision, ”Cayer said.
