Two masked, hooded men approached a crowd near a laundromat and barber shop in New York’s Queens neighborhood and opened fire, injuring 10 people, including three known gang members, before escaping on a moped, police said Sunday morning.
The shooting took place in the Queen’s neighborhood of Corona just before 11 p.m. on Saturday. Police said 40 shell casings had so far been recovered from the scene near 99th Street and 37th Avenue.

“It was a cheeky and coordinated attack, for lack of a better word,” said James Essig, NYPD chief detective. said at a press conference. “This is unacceptable, and it must stop.”
NYPD officials surveillance video broadcast two unknown men approaching the group on foot. The two men brandished guns and started shooting at people standing in front of the barbershop. Two other unknown men on mopeds followed the shooters and picked them up both before fleeing.
Police said passers-by were walking along the sidewalk and a party was underway at a restaurant a few doors down from the barbershop at the time of the shooting.

Eight men and two women aged 19 to 72 have all been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The most seriously injured were gunshot wounds in the stomach.
Essig said seven of the victims were innocent bystanders, while the other three were known members of the Trinitario street gang – who are believed to be the intended targets.
Two other men wearing masks and balaclavas retrieved the two shooters after they opened fire and fled.

“There’s only one common theme I want to get out of, it’s a recurring theme that keeps happening, and it has to stop all over town,” Essig said. “These are gang members; these are guns, several weapons on the scene, used scooters, masks; and finally, unintentional targets being hit. This is unacceptable on our streets in New York, and it must stop. ”
