The federal government on Friday arrested a 22-year-old man who wanted to carry out a terrorist attack with a lone wolf in Times Square, the famous tourist destination of New York City.
Federal prosecutors have said that Ashiqul Alam of Jackson Heights, Queens, was arrested Thursday by the FBI after agreeing to buy, as part of his plan, a pair of weapons from 9mm Glock semi-automatic fist with serial numbers removed.
"As it is supposed, Ashiqul Alam bought illegal weapons as part of his plan to kill law enforcement and civilians during a terrorist attack in Times Square," said Brooklyn American lawyer Richard Donoghue. "What he did not know was that he was buying weapons from government agents, who monitored his plans and intervened to prevent those plans from escalating into deadly violence."

According to the complaint, Alam has repeatedly expressed its desire to buy firearms and explosives for use in a terrorist attack.
He was also accused of identifying two targets, Times Square or Washington, to kill a senior government official, and to visit Times Square on "reconnaissance" trips.
He allegedly investigated many ways to carry out such an attack, including using a lifejacket and procuring AR-15 assault rifles to kill law enforcement officers.
Alam was arrested for possession of weapons and WNBC-TV quoted federal law enforcement officials as saying he was not expected to face terrorism charges although he made comments of a jihadist nature.
The complaint says that he praised the 9/11 terrorist attack with an FBI infiltration agent.

"The mission is a complete success, thousands of US soldiers have died and billions of their money has gone into the war," said the complainant.
He is a legal permanent resident of Bangladesh with a green card, the resort reported. He lives with his parents.

Prosecutors said Alam had undergone surgery at the Lasik in April, saying the infiltration: "Let's say we are attacking, let's say my glasses are falling. What if I shoot you accidentally? You know what I mean. Imagine how the news channel would call me "Looney Tunes terrorist" or "blind terrorist".
