News from New York earlier this week could potentially have a big impact on the Phillies’ search for a front office leader.
Both teams are believed to be looking for a president of baseball operations, a higher title than GM. However, Mets president Sandy Alderson said Monday night that he would serve as baseball operations chief for the time being and that the Mets would hire a general manager under him to replace Brodie Van Wagenen.
Alderson was hired by new Mets owner Steve Cohen to serve as team president. He was going to hire a president of baseball operations who then hired a general manager. But now Alderson will be running the show day in and day out, possibly for a year. He can bring in someone whom he can mentor and prepare for the long-term job.
Over the weekend, we looked at the many reasons why the Mets job would be more appealing to a candidate than the Phillies. That changes with this news because if both teams wanted the same person, the Phillies could offer a better title and more power, a role that comes directly under ownership.
This best title of president of baseball operations has become mainstream in MLB over the past decade, with owners using it to attract GMs who would otherwise view the movement as sideways. The most accomplished current and former executives would want this title on GM.
The team that will bring Theo Epstein back into the game won’t just hire him as GM, for example.
Former Marlins general manager Michael Hill has sparked interest from both the Phillies and Mets. If both teams were to land on him as their best guy, the Phillies’ offer would likely be more appealing due to the extra authority in the short term.
One of the main reasons for Alderson’s decision could be that teams like the Mets and Phillies ran into obstacles in gaining permission to speak to the best assistant general managers. Homeowners aren’t as willing in 2020 to let promising and vital executives out of their contracts. Often times, this means a raise in pay rather than permission to help another team.
