A New York firefighter is still missing on Tuesday after a massive fire that destroyed a building at a nursing home continues to burn, leaving at least one person dead and others injured, officials said.
More than eight hours later, the fire continued to rage at Evergreen Court, an assisted living facility in Spring Valley, about 40 miles north of Manhattan.

Two firefighters who fought to put out the flames suffered from smoke inhalation and one was taken to a local hospital after a heart attack, according to FOX 5 New York. Fire officials said one of the facility’s 133 residents died in hospital.
Twenty-three of 27 volunteer fire departments in Rothland County, New York, responded to the scene, along with more than 100 firefighters.
The missing firefighter is from the local Spring Valley Fire Department, officials said. He was reportedly on the third floor trying to rescue residents when parts of the structure began to collapse, and he then issued a distress call.
“The mayday was answered. However, with the extent of the fire, the volume of the fire, the conditions were just too unbearable where the firefighters entered, they just couldn’t locate the firefighter. and they are gone, “Rockland County Fire and EMS director Chris Kear told reporters Tuesday.
A mini-excavator was brought in in an attempt to locate the missing firefighter.
Evergreen Court is known to have a partial sprinkler, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Earlier reports indicated that people may have been trapped inside. First responders were seen evacuating people from inside the building, videos showed. Some of the elderly were evacuated to another facility, Witness Benny Polatseck tweeted.

Another eyewitness, Mark Kennedy, posted photos and videos of the blaze on social media, which could be seen from miles away.
“The blaze probably raged for about two hours or more before the building collapsed,” he told Insider.
